One of the most common questions people ask when planning for the future is “How much money do I actually need to retire comfortably?”

The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Retirement is not defined by reaching a specific net worth. It’s defined by having enough wealth to support the lifestyle you want, without depending on a salary or active income. Your Freedom Number it is the amount of wealth required to fund your future expenses, adjusted for inflation throughout your retirement years.

Simply put:

Freedom Number = The amount of money required to make work optional.

Knowing your Freedom Number is only the beginning. Reaching it requires a disciplined financial plan that combines your current investments, SIPs, future savings, and active income.

  • 80 to 99: You are approaching your target.

Different Types of FIRE

Financial Independence is not one-size-fits-all. Different lifestyles require different retirement corpuses.

  • Lean FIRE (15x)

Financial independence with a minimalist lifestyle and essential spending only.

  • Standard FIRE (25x)

Financial independence that supports a comfortable lifestyle using the widely accepted 4% withdrawal rule.

  • Comfortable FIRE (33x)

A larger retirement corpus that provides greater flexibility, travel opportunities, and a buffer for unexpected expenses.

  • Fat FIRE (50x)

Retirement with luxury living, extensive travel, premium healthcare, and minimal financial constraints.

  • Legacy FIRE (75x+)

A wealth level designed not only for retirement but also for generational wealth transfer, philanthropy, and legacy planning.

How is the Freedom Number Calculated?

The calculator computes the Freedom Number using both the FIRE Multiple Method and a retirement cash-flow method. To provide a more conservative estimate, the higher of the two values is used as the final Freedom Number. This helps ensure that the retirement corpus is sufficient to support future expenses throughout the retirement period.

Step 1: Calculating Future Annual Expenses

Suppose:

  • Current Monthly Expense = ₹50,000
  • Annual Expense = ₹6,00,000
  • Inflation = 6%
  • Years to Retirement = 20

Future Annual Expense: ₹6,00,000 × (1 + 6%) ²⁰= ₹19,24,284

This means that a lifestyle costing ₹6 lakh annually today may require approximately ₹19.24 lakh per year after 20 years.

Step 2: Calculating the FIRE Corpus

Depending on the lifestyle you choose, the calculator estimates the retirement corpus required using FIRE multiples.

For a Standard FIRE lifestyle:

FIRE Corpus = Future Annual Expense × 25

₹19,24,281 × 25 = ₹4.81 Crore

This represents the corpus required to support a comfortable retirement using the widely accepted 4% withdrawal rule.

Step 3: Calculating the Retirement Corpus

The calculator also estimates the corpus required to fund your future expenses throughout retirement using a retirement cash-flow approach.

This calculation considers:

  • Future Annual Expenses
  • Years in Retirement
  • Inflation-adjusted (Real) Return

Using these inputs, the required retirement corpus is calculated using the Present Value (PV) method.

In this example, the Retirement Corpus is estimated at approximately ₹4.89 Crore.

Since the Retirement Corpus (₹4.89 Cr) is higher than the FIRE Corpus (₹4.81 Cr), the calculator uses ₹4.89 Cr as the final Freedom Number.

Step 4: Calculate the projected wealth at retirement

Projected Wealth at Retirement is calculated by estimating the future value of your current net worth and future SIP contributions at the expected rate of return until your chosen Freedom Age.

  • Current Net Worth= ₹8,00,000
  • Monthly SIP= ₹50,000
  • Expected Return= 12%
  • Years to Freedom= 20

The calculator estimates Projected Wealth at Retirement = ₹5.72 Crore

Step 5: Calculating Your Freedom Score

  • Freedom Number: ₹4.89Crore
  • Projected Wealth at Retirement: ₹5.72 Crore

Freedom Score: (₹5.72 Cr ÷ ₹4.89 Cr) × 100 = 119

Interpretation

A Freedom Score of 119 means your projected retirement wealth exceeds the amount required to achieve financial independence by 19%.

A score above 100 indicates that you are on track to achieve your chosen Freedom Number.
